About ZONE:
[by Nataly Gorodetsky]
Zone. There is an existing reality, which might be determined within an area of finished objects with certain function. Simultaneously, there is another reality, which is represented by indefinite objects without any customary use. We should call this reality "ZONE".
Inversion. "Zone" comes as inversion of one of the basically terms in urban planning of XX century. According to the customary meaning of this term, zone is characterized as any area with definite features like: function, boundaries, planning and etc. Let us make a clue, that in the end of XX century the idea of strong functional division has already lost its previous meaning. Didactical, functional planning has been seized as prisoner image in eyes of many contemporaries. A modern human being has inclined to look for more liberated architecture, which would have emphasize his personality and individuality. In other words, human being is looking for his subjective parallel world. "Zone" as inversion represents independent liberated objects that exist as an uncontrolled world without any planned hierarchy. "Zone" as a place, where things happen secretly, gives a visitor a sense of privacy. This sense could be described such as "I was the first one, who has seen this place"; or "I have found this place alone".
It describes one of the reasons why people like to visit abandoned houses or areas with buildings under construction. If so, one could compare between "zone" and a screen that is able to absorb virtual world's projections existing in people's imagination.
Dynamics. We are used to see a static object emphasizing its monumentality based on finished shapes. On the contrary, erosion that takes a place within a "zone" should be seen as organic movement that is representing fortuity and incredibility of "zone's" structure.
Envelope. "Zone" can't be observed. One has to find it. By this mean, a super-object might be located behind an envelope as a hidden spectacle in a city, while everyone can catch his private niche in it. The envelope's structure is not neutral, but ought to be created from something definite: by shape's organization, by tecsture and surface. This envelope is not a Cartesian world of neutrality, but structurally definitive in a proper situation. This envelope will underline an organically character of "zone".
Continuity. "Zone" emphasizes a theme of not finished and continuous objects. The space of Internet, a place where everyone may create his private niche\site gives one of the fine examples to this topic.
Invisible-empty. Due to the hidden character of "zone" and the continuous erosion of objects within zoned space, one could suppose an existance of unvisual or empty spaces situated within a "zoned" area. These spaces might be comparable to a black screen - a visual line that could only be imagined. "You know about an existing of this space, but you can't see it. Probably, this invisible space appeared in the region of a section between two objects. The section should be filled and deserted during some period, and in this order it should emphasize an exchangeable and not finished structure of a building. This empty space should stay undefined: it would conceal by the core- internal super object that every season would show it's different side.
