Background:
Formanta was originally made at Borisov, USSR in the late 70's and during the 80's. The producion even continued into the early 90's (after USSR desintegrated) but stopped as soon as new Russian guitar makers ("Rustone", "Shamray" and similar) entered the scene. Although '90-s Russian guitars were also prelly low quality instruments they were much more playable than any USSR-made guitar. The latest Formantas date back to 1992.
Formanta had a built-in fuzz (a cool feature of all Borisov electric guitars). Later Solo II had even two built-in FX's - phaser and fuzz.

Don't you hate it when you run out of stupid little parts that bring a project to a standstill? That's where I'm at with the Formanta restoration. I'm waiting on the tuners and bridges I have coming, some knobs ... and a stupid 49-cent jack. Still, it's looking pretty good so far.
You can see how the Red Onyx faceplates make all the pickups look alike, but they ain't. The neck and middle pickups are the wimpy 5k originals, but there's a 8.5k output P-90 hidden under the Formanta cover nearest the bridge. At the moment, it's a bit easier to spot because the polepieces are shinier than the ones on the original pickups, but that's easy to fix. In honor of a great Soviet tradition, I used some car/truck switches from the auto parts store. They're a bit smaller and neater-looking that the big honkin' original switches.
The knobs on this are temporary. I'm going to use some black Rickenbacker-style knobs with silver inserts on this thing: two larger ones for the master volume and tone controls, and two smaller ones for the overdrive and its volume control. I case you're wondering, yes, the LED for the effect will light up when the OD effect is on.
I'm debating making up a silver Glass Glitter baseplate that'll go under the amputee trem unit to cover over that big honkin' hole. Of course if you've got an original Formanta trem unit that's going spare ... .
